Nexus Game Studio – Independent Game Developer

Barrie Game Dev Scene

Something that has been bothering us for a while now is the hidden, or lack-there-of game dev scene here in Barrie, Ontario. This is our hometown, where all our team resides and yet, after all these years, the scene seems non existent. Recently we discovered other local game developers in town, or people who are interested in game development in general, yet we have nothing to bring us together. We want to fix this. The Toronto game dev scene is thriving with many groups and game jams, why can we not have the same effort in a large city like Barrie.

This is the first start of our effort. We’re starting with a Facebook group to help spread the word locally. If you live in Barrie, Ontario or surrounding area and love to make games or even want to learn, we would love for you to join, simply follow the link below!

Barrie Indie Game Developers Group

We want create a social hub for local developers (be it pro or novice) and hopefully plan future meet-ups and events. This is a starting effort and we hope we can shed some light on a great community.

I sorta came across this and got excited. All that came to mind was “FINALLY!”

I’ve been searching to find groups closer to Barrie, but Toronto has all the good things. I went to school for game development and art there, been able to go to an IDGA meeting and DMG meetings when I can. Of course, limited to GO transit with no place to stay over night… A bit of a hassle.

I hope you don’t mind, but I did send in a request on facebook for the group (should be by Nat Ch). Actually, I worked with Stephen when we were both at Walmart (I may be wrong, but he looks like a guy that worked in the Electronics dept when I was there), and I worked with James when I interned for Phantom Compass last year.

Glad to see the gaming scene trying to grow in a town like Barrie.

    Hey Natalie,

Got your request and added you to the group, thanks for your interest!

You are correct, I was the electronics guy haha. Great to see other locals in the game dev scene. That’s why we made this group, to help grow this “hidden” community.

Welcome to the group, hope to see you at the next meetup!
